Withdrawal of which of the following hormones is the immediate cause of menstruation?

  1. Progesterone
  2. FSH
  3. FSH-RH
  4. Estrogen

Answer

(1) Progesterone

Solution

As per NCERT, after ovulation the corpus luteum secretes large amounts of progesterone, which is essential for maintenance of the endometrium.

⇒ In the absence of fertilisation, the corpus luteum degenerates.

⇒ Progesterone level falls, and the endometrium can no longer be maintained.

∴ The endometrium disintegrates and menstruation begins; withdrawal of progesterone is the immediate cause.
