Which of the following characteristics is mainly responsible for diversification of insects on land?

  1. Exoskeleton
  2. Eyes
  3. Segmentation
  4. Bilateral symmetry

Answer

(1) Exoskeleton

Solution

Insects (Arthropoda) have a chitinous exoskeleton covering the body.

∵ The chitinous exoskeleton prevents loss of water (desiccation), protects the body and provides support and sites for muscle attachment,

∴ it allowed insects to survive in dry terrestrial habitats and diversify on land.

Eyes, segmentation and bilateral symmetry are also present in many aquatic animals, so they do not explain the success on land.
