Edible part of banana is

  1. epicarp
  2. mesocarp and less developed endocarp
  3. endocarp and less developed mesocarp
  4. epicarp and mesocarp

Answer

(3) endocarp and less developed mesocarp

Solution

As per NCERT, the fruit consists of a wall or pericarp and seeds; a fleshy pericarp is differentiated into epicarp, mesocarp and endocarp.

In banana (a berry), the epicarp along with a thin outer part of the mesocarp forms the rind (peel), which is not eaten.

The soft, sugary pulp is formed mainly from the fleshy endocarp, together with the less developed inner mesocarp.

∴ Edible part of banana is the endocarp and less developed mesocarp.
