The first acceptor of electrons from an excited chlorophyll molecule of photosystem II is

  1. iron-sulphur protein
  2. ferredoxin
  3. quinone
  4. cytochrome

Answer

(3) quinone

Solution

As per NCERT, in photosystem II the reaction-centre chlorophyll a (P680) absorbs light, its electrons become excited and are accepted by a primary electron acceptor, which passes them to an electron transport system.

∵ The primary acceptor of PS II is a quinone type acceptor (Q, via pheophytin); the electrons then pass through plastoquinone and the cytochrome b6f complex to PS I.

∵ Iron-sulphur protein and ferredoxin are acceptors on the PS I side, and cytochrome comes later in the chain ⇒ (1), (2), (4) are wrong.

Answer: (3)
