Which statement is wrong for viruses?

  1. All are parasites.
  2. All of them have helical symmetry.
  3. They have ability to synthesize nucleic acids and proteins.
  4. Antibiotics have no effect on them.

Answer

(2) All of them have helical symmetry.

Solution

∵ Viruses are obligate parasites; inside a living host cell they take over its machinery and synthesise their own nucleic acid and proteins ⇒ (1) and (3) are right.

∵ Antibiotics act on bacterial structures and processes that viruses lack ⇒ (4) is right.

As per NCERT, viruses show different shapes: tobacco mosaic virus is helical (rod-shaped), while many others such as bacteriophages and adenoviruses are polyhedral or complex.

∴ "All of them have helical symmetry" is the wrong statement.

Answer: (2)
