Which of the following enhances or induces fusion of protoplasts ?

  1. Sodium chloride and potassium chloride
  2. IAA and kinetin
  3. Polyethylene glycol and sodium nitrate
  4. IAA and gibberellins

Answer

(3) Polyethylene glycol and sodium nitrate

Solution

As per NCERT, isolated protoplasts (cells without cell walls, obtained by digesting walls with enzymes) from two different varieties of plants can be fused to get hybrid protoplasts (somatic hybrids).

⇒ Chemical fusogens used to induce this fusion are polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3).

∵ IAA, kinetin and gibberellins are plant growth regulators used in the culture medium, not fusogens; NaCl and KCl do not induce fusion.

∴ Polyethylene glycol and sodium nitrate induce fusion of protoplasts.
