When both ovaries are removed from rat then which hormone is decreased in blood?

  1. Oxytocin
  2. Prolactin
  3. Estrogen
  4. Gonadotropin releasing factor

Answer

(3) Estrogen

Solution

As per NCERT, the ovary produces two groups of steroid hormones — estrogen (from growing ovarian follicles) and progesterone (from the corpus luteum).

∵ Oxytocin and prolactin come from the pituitary and GnRH from the hypothalamus, they are not reduced by ovariectomy (GnRH may even rise due to loss of negative feedback),

∴ removal of both ovaries decreases estrogen in the blood.
