The main organelle involved in modification and routing of newly synthesized proteins to their destinations is -

  1. Mitochondria
  2. Endoplasmic Reticulum
  3. Chloroplast
  4. Lysosome

Answer

(2) Endoplasmic Reticulum

Solution

As per NCERT, the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) bears ribosomes and is actively involved in protein synthesis and secretion; the newly made proteins enter the ER lumen, where they are folded and modified, and are then packed into vesicles and routed towards the Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, plasma membrane or outside the cell.

∵ Mitochondria and chloroplasts are energy organelles and lysosomes are digestive vesicles, none of them routes proteins.

∴ Among the given organelles, the endoplasmic reticulum is the main one involved in modification and routing of newly synthesized proteins.
