Male and female gametophytes are independent and free-living in

  1. mustard
  2. castor
  3. Pinus
  4. Sphagnum

Answer

(4) Sphagnum

Solution

As per NCERT, in bryophytes the main plant body is the haploid gametophyte, which is free-living and independent; the sporophyte is dependent on it.

∵ In gymnosperms ( Pinus) and angiosperms (mustard, castor) the gametophytes are reduced and remain within the sporangia (ovule / pollen),

∴ independent, free-living male and female gametophytes occur in the moss Sphagnum.

Answer: (4)
