Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. A is true but R is false.
  2. A is false but R is true.
  3. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
  4. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A

Answer

(3) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Solution

Assertion: Nearly 20–25 per cent of CO2 is transported by RBCs (haemoglobin) as carbamino-haemoglobin, whereas about 70 per cent is carried as bicarbonate. True.

Reason: Binding of CO2 with haemoglobin is related to the partial pressure of CO2; pO2 is a major factor affecting this binding. When pCO2 is high and pO2 is low, as in the tissues, more binding of CO2 occurs. True, and it explains how carbamino-haemoglobin is formed in the tissues.

Answer: (3)
