Correct relation between dissociation constants of a dibasic acid is

  1. Ka1 = Ka2
  2. Ka1 > Ka2
  3. Ka1 < Ka2
  4. Ka1 = 1 Ka2

Answer

(2) Ka1 > Ka2

Solution

A dibasic acid H2A ionises in two steps:

H2A H+ + HA-; Ka1

HA- H+ + A2-; Ka2

As per NCERT, the second proton is removed from a negatively charged ion HA-, which holds it more strongly (electrostatic attraction).

∴ The second ionisation is always weaker: Ka1 > Ka2

Answer: (2)
