Saline solution is given to patients of Cholera because
- NaCl produces energy
- Na+ prevents water loss from body
- NaCl is antibacterial
- NaCl functions as regulatory material
Answer
(2) Na+ prevents water loss from body
Solution
In cholera, severe diarrhoea causes heavy loss of water and salts, leading to dehydration.
∵ Body fluid volume is held by its osmotic concentration, of which Na+ is the main extracellular ion.
⇒ Saline restores the lost Na+, so water is retained in the body and further dehydration is prevented.
∴ NaCl neither gives energy nor kills the bacteria.
