Root pressure is small and can push water only a few metres; it is not seen in many tall trees.

As per NCERT, most plants meet their need by transpiration pull: water is pulled up as a continuous column.

The column does not break because of cohesion (attraction between water molecules), adhesion (attraction of water to the xylem walls) and surface tension.

Ascent of xylem sap is mainly due to cohesion and adhesion of water molecules (cohesion–tension–transpiration pull model).
