Which one of the following will accelerate phosphorus cycle?

  1. Burning of fossil fuels
  2. Volcanic activity
  3. Weathering of rocks
  4. Rainfall and storms

Answer

(3) Weathering of rocks

Solution

As per NCERT, the natural reservoir of phosphorus is rock, which contains phosphorus in the form of phosphates.

When rocks are weathered, minute amounts of these phosphates dissolve in soil solution and are absorbed by the roots of plants.

∴ Weathering of rocks increases the input of phosphorus into the cycle and accelerates it. (Burning of fossil fuels and volcanic activity affect the carbon cycle; the phosphorus cycle has no significant gaseous exchange.)
