Common indicator organism of water pollution is :-

  1. Escherichia coli
  2. Lemna paucicostata
  3. Entamoeba histolytica
  4. Eichhornia crassipes

Answer

(1) Escherichia coli

Solution

Water polluted by sewage contains human faecal matter.

⇒ Escherichia coli is a normal inhabitant of the human large intestine and is passed out in very large numbers in faeces.

⇒ Its presence (coliform count) in water is therefore used as the common indicator of faecal / sewage pollution.

∵ Lemna and Eichhornia are aquatic weeds, and Entamoeba histolytica is a pathogen, not a routine indicator.

∴ The common indicator organism is Escherichia coli.
