Which of the following is not one of the prime health risks associated with greater UV radiation through the atmosphere due to depletion of stratospheric ozone?

  1. Increased liver cancer
  2. Increased skin cancer
  3. Damage to eyes
  4. Reduced Immune System

Answer

(1) Increased liver cancer

Solution

As per NCERT, UV-B damages DNA and mutation may occur; it causes aging of skin, damage to skin cells and various types of skin cancers. In human eye, cornea absorbs UV-B radiation, and a high dose causes inflammation of cornea (snow-blindness, cataract).

⇒ Greater UV exposure also suppresses the immune system.

∵ UV radiation does not penetrate deep into the body, it does not cause liver cancer.

∴ Increased liver cancer is not a health risk of ozone depletion.
