High value of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) indicates that :

  1. water is highly polluted
  2. consumption of organic matter in the water is higher by the microbes
  3. water is pure
  4. water is less polluted

Answer

(2) consumption of organic matter in the water is higher by the microbes

Solution

As per NCERT, BOD refers to the amount of oxygen that would be consumed if all the organic matter in one litre of water were oxidised by bacteria (microbes).

⇒ A high BOD means the microbes consume (decompose) more organic matter in the water, using up more dissolved oxygen.

∴ High value of BOD indicates that consumption of organic matter in the water by the microbes is higher (such water has a high polluting potential).
