Which of the following alkane cannot be made in good yield by Wurtz reaction?
- 2, 3-Dimethylbutane
- n-Heptane
- n-Butane
- n-Hexane
Answer
(2) n-Heptane
Solution
Wurtz reaction: 2R-X + 2Na dry ether R-R + 2NaX
As per NCERT, it is used to prepare higher alkanes with an even number of carbon atoms (symmetrical R–R).
n-Butane: from CH3CH2Br; n-Hexane: from CH3CH2CH2Br; 2,3-Dimethylbutane: from (CH3)2CHBr.
n-Heptane (C7) needs two different halides (C3H7X + C4H9X) ⇒ a mixture of hexane, heptane and octane is formed.
∴ n-Heptane cannot be made in good yield.
