What will happen if the stretch receptors of the urinary bladder wall are totally removed?
- Micturition will continue
- Urine will continue to collect normally in the bladder
- There will be no micturition
- Urine will not collect in the bladder
Answer
(1) Micturition will continue
Solution
As per NCERT, urine formed by the nephrons is stored in the urinary bladder till a voluntary signal is given by the CNS. This signal is initiated by the stretching of the urinary bladder as it gets filled with urine; in response, the stretch receptors on the bladder wall send signals to the CNS, which passes on motor messages to contract the bladder muscles and relax the urethral sphincter (micturition reflex).
Urine production by the kidneys does not depend on these receptors, so urine keeps reaching the bladder.
If the stretch receptors are totally removed, the CNS no longer receives information about bladder filling, so the voluntary control (holding and timing) of urination is lost.
Urine is not retained under control; it keeps on being passed out, i.e., micturition will continue (uncontrolled).
