Which one of the following also acts as a catalyst in a bacterial cell?

  1. 5S rRNA
  2. snRNA
  3. hnRNA
  4. 23S rRNA

Answer

(4) 23S rRNA

Solution

As per NCERT, in bacteria the 23S rRNA of the large ribosomal subunit acts as the enzyme (ribozyme) that catalyses peptide bond formation during translation.

∵ snRNA and hnRNA occur only in eukaryotes, and 5S rRNA is only a structural component of the ribosome,

∴ 23S rRNA is the catalytic RNA in a bacterial cell.
