As per NCERT, primary treatment involves physical removal of particles — large and small — from the sewage through filtration and sedimentation.

⇒ Floating debris is removed by sequential filtration; grit (soil and small pebbles) is removed by sedimentation, leaving primary sludge and effluent.

⇒ Secondary (biological) treatment reduces the BOD with the help of aerobic microbes.

∴ Suspended solids are removed in primary treatment.
