Which one of the following pairs of organisms are exotic species introduced in India ?

  1. Ficus religiosa, Lantana camara
  2. Nile perch, Ficus religiosa
  3. Water hyacinth, Prosopis cineraria
  4. Lantana camara, Water hyacinth

Answer

(4) Lantana camara, Water hyacinth

Solution

As per NCERT, when alien species are introduced unintentionally or deliberately, some of them turn invasive and cause decline or extinction of indigenous species.

⇒ NCERT gives the environmental damage caused by invasive weed species like carrot grass ( Parthenium), Lantana and water hyacinth ( Eichhornia) in India.

∵ Ficus religiosa (peepal) and Prosopis cineraria (khejri) are native Indian trees, while Nile perch was introduced into Lake Victoria (East Africa), not India.

∴ Lantana camara and water hyacinth are exotic species introduced in India.
