X is the number of geometrical isomers exhibited by [Pt(NH3)(H2O)BrCl]. Y is the number of optically inactive isomer(s) exhibited by [CrCl2(ox)2]3-. Z is the number of geometrical isomers exhibited by [Co(NH3)3(NO2)3]. The value of X + Y + Z is .

Answer

6

Solution

X: [Pt(NH3)(H2O)BrCl] is square planar of type [Mabcd]

3 geometrical isomers (fix a; b, c or d can be trans to it) X = 3

Y: [CrCl2(ox)2]3- is octahedral of type [M(AA)2b2]

cis-isomer: no plane of symmetry optically active (d and l pair)

trans-isomer: has a plane of symmetry optically inactive

Y = 1

Z: [Co(NH3)3(NO2)3] is octahedral of type [Ma3b3]

fac and mer isomers Z = 2

X + Y + Z = 3 + 1 + 2 = 6

Answer: 6
