Balbiani rings are very large chromosomal puffs on the polytene chromosomes of the salivary glands of insect larvae (e.g. Chironomus).

⇒ In a puff the DNA uncoils and is actively transcribed, so a large amount of RNA is made there.

∴ This RNA (mRNA) is used to make proteins (salivary proteins), so Balbiani rings are sites of RNA and protein synthesis.
