If a diploid cell is treated with colchicine then it becomes : -
- Tetraploid
- Monoploid
- Diploid
- Triploid
Answer
(1) Tetraploid
Solution
Colchicine inhibits the formation of spindle fibres during cell division.
⇒ The chromosomes replicate and the chromatids separate, but they cannot move to the poles and the cell does not divide.
∴ The chromosome number doubles: 2n 4n, i.e. a diploid cell becomes tetraploid.
As per NCERT, failure of cytokinesis after telophase leads to an increase in a whole set of chromosomes, called polyploidy.
