Transport of food material in higher plants takes place through -

  1. Sieve elements
  2. Transfusion tissue
  3. Companion cells
  4. Tracheids

Answer

(1) Sieve elements

Solution

As per NCERT, phloem transports food materials, usually from leaves to other parts of the plant.

Phloem of angiosperms is composed of sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres; the sieve elements (sieve tubes) are the actual conducting channels of food.

∵ Companion cells only help in maintaining the pressure gradient in the sieve tubes, tracheids conduct water and minerals, and transfusion tissue occurs in gymnosperm leaves.

∴ Food is transported through the sieve elements.
