The driver of a car travelling with speed 30 m/s towards a hill sounds a horn of frequency 600 Hz. If the velocity of sound in air is 330 m/s, the frequency of reflected sound as heard by driver is

  1. 555.5 Hz
  2. 720 Hz
  3. 500 Hz
  4. 550 Hz

Answer

(2) 720 Hz

Solution

The hill receives sound from a source moving towards it, and reflects it back to the driver, who is an observer moving towards the hill (the image source).

⇒ f' = f ( v + v0v - vs ) with v0 = vs = 30 m/s

⇒ f' = 600 330 + 30330 - 30

= 600 360300

= 720 Hz

Answer: (2)
