The surface tension of which of the following liquids is maximum ?

  1. C2H5OH
  2. CH3OH
  3. H2O
  4. C6H6

Answer

(3) H2O

Solution

As per NCERT, the magnitude of surface tension depends on the strength of the attractive forces between the molecules of the liquid.

∵ Each H2O molecule forms up to four hydrogen bonds (two O–H and two lone pairs), giving the strongest intermolecular forces; alcohols form fewer hydrogen bonds and benzene has only London forces.

⇒ Surface tension (approx., in mN m-1 at 20 °C): H2O 72.8 > C6H6 28.9 > CH3OH 22.6 ≈ C2H5OH 22.3

∴ Water has the maximum surface tension.
