A particle moves along a straight line OX. At a time t (in seconds) the distance x (in metres) of the particle from O is given by x = 40 + 12t - t3. How long would the particle travel before coming to rest ?
- 16 m
- 24 m
- 40 m
- 56 m
Answer
(1) 16 m
Solution
v = dxdt = 12 - 3t2
At rest: 12 - 3t2 = 0 ⇒ t = 2 s
At t = 0: x = 40 m
At t = 2 s: x = 40 + 24 - 8 = 56 m
∵ v stays positive between t = 0 and t = 2 s, the particle moves in one direction only.
∴ Distance travelled = 56 - 40 = 16 m
