HIV that causes AIDS, first starts destroying

  1. Helper T-lymphocytes
  2. B-lymphocytes
  3. Leucocytes
  4. Thrombocytes

Answer

(1) Helper T-lymphocytes

Solution

As per NCERT, after getting into the body, HIV enters macrophages, where its RNA genome is copied into viral DNA by reverse transcriptase; macrophages then act as an HIV factory.

⇒ At the same time, HIV enters helper T-lymphocytes (TH), replicates and produces progeny viruses.

⇒ The progeny viruses attack other helper T-lymphocytes, so their number decreases progressively.

∴ Among the given cells, HIV first destroys helper T-lymphocytes.
