Which of the following is an amine hormone?

  1. Insulin
  2. Progesterone
  3. Thyroxine
  4. Oxypurine

Answer

(3) Thyroxine

Solution

As per NCERT, hormones have diverse chemical structures: steroids (e.g. progesterone, oestrogens), polypeptides (e.g. insulin, endorphins) and amino acid derivatives (e.g. epinephrine, norepinephrine). Thyroxine, produced in the thyroid gland, is an iodinated derivative of the amino acid tyrosine.

Insulin – polypeptide hormone; Progesterone – steroid hormone; Oxypurine – a purine base derivative, not a hormone.

Thyroxine is an amine (amino acid derived) hormone.
