A train moving at a speed of 220 m s-1 towards a stationary object, emits a sound of frequency 1000 Hz. Some of the sound reaching the object gets reflected back to the train as echo. The frequency of the echo as detected by the driver of the train is (Speed of sound in air is 330 m s-1)

  1. 3500 Hz
  2. 4000 Hz
  3. 5000 Hz
  4. 3000 Hz

Answer

(3) 5000 Hz

Solution

Step 1: source (train) moving towards the stationary object:

f1 = f ( vv - vs ) = 1000 330330 - 220

= 1000 330110 = 3000 Hz

Step 2: the object reflects f1 as a stationary source; the driver moves towards it:

f2 = f1 ( v + vov ) = 3000 330 + 220330

= 3000 550330 = 5000 Hz
