If the point of intersection of the lines x+13= y+a5= z+b+17 and x-21= y-b4= z-2a7 lies on xy-plane, then the value of a+b is :

  1. 2
  2. 5
  3. 7
  4. 9

Answer

(3) 7

Solution

General point of L1: (3s-1, 5s-a, 7s-b-1)

General point of L2: (t+2, 4t+b, 7t+2a)

The common point lies on the xy-plane (z=0):

7s-b-1=0 s= b+17; 7t+2a=0 t=- 2a7

Equating x-coordinates: 3(b+1)7-1=2- 2a7

2a+3b=18 …(i)

Equating y-coordinates: 5(b+1)7-a=b- 8a7

a-2b=-5 …(ii)

From (i) and (ii): b=4, a=3

∴ a+b=7

Answer: (3)
