The sum of all values of , for which the shortest distance between the lines x+1 = y-2-1 = z-4- and x = y-12 = z-12 is 2, is

  1. -6
  2. -8
  3. 8
  4. 6

Answer

(1) -6

Solution

Line 1: point A(–1, 2, 4), b1 = i - j - k

Line 2: point B(0, 1, 1), b2 = i + 2 j + 2 k

b1 b2 = vmatrix i & j & k \ & -1 & - \ & 2 & 2 vmatrix = 0 i - 3 2 j + 3 k

AB = i - j - 3 k

⇒ AB ( b1 b2) = 3 2 - 9 , | b1 b2| = 3| | 2 + 1

Shortest distance = |3 2 - 9 |3| | 2 + 1 = | - 3| 2 + 1 = 2

⇒ ( - 3)2 = 2( 2 + 1)

⇒ 2 + 6 - 7 = 0 ⇒ = 1 or -7

∴ Sum of all values of = 1 + (-7) = -6
