Lassaigne's test is used for detection of :
- Phosphorous and halogens only
- Nitrogen, Sulphur and Phosphorous only
- Nitrogen, Sulphur, phosphorous and halogens
- Nitrogen and Sulphur only
Answer
(3) Nitrogen, Sulphur, phosphorous and halogens
Solution
Fusion with Na converts covalent N, S, X into ionic NaCN, Na2S, NaX (sodium fusion extract):
N: NaCN gives Prussian blue
S: Na2S gives violet colour with sodium nitroprusside
X: NaX gives AgX ppt with AgNO3
P: oxidised to phosphate, gives yellow ppt with ammonium molybdate
∵ As per NCERT, nitrogen, sulphur, halogens and phosphorus are all detected by Lassaigne's test
