Grignard reagent RMgBr (P) reacts with water and forms a gas (Q). One gram of Q occupies 1.4 dm3 at STP. (P) on reaction with dry ice in dry ether followed by H3O+ forms a compound (Z). 0.1 mole of (Z) will weigh g. (Nearest integer)

Answer

6

Solution

Molar mass of Q = 22.4 dm31.4 dm3 1 g = 16 g mol-1

⇒ Q is CH4, so R = CH3 and P is CH3MgBr.

CH3MgBr + H2O CH4 + Mg(OH)Br

With dry ice: CH3MgBr [(ii) H3O+](i) CO2, dry ether CH3COOH

⇒ Z = CH3COOH, molar mass = 60 g mol-1

∴ Mass of 0.1 mol of Z = 0.1 60 = 6 g

Answer: 6
