The letters of the word "UDAYPUR" are written in all possible ways with or without meaning and these words are arranged as in a dictionary. The rank of the word "UDAYPUR" is

  1. 1579
  2. 1578
  3. 1580
  4. 1581

Answer

(3) 1580

Solution

Letters: U, D, A, Y, P, U, R (U twice). Alphabetical order: A, D, P, R, U, U, Y.

Words beginning with A, D, P or R: 4 6!2! = 4 360 = 1440

Words beginning with UA (remaining D, Y, P, U, R all different): 5! = 120

UDA is next; words beginning with UDAP, UDAR, UDAU: 3 3! = 18

UDAY is next; then UDAYP is the first possible start (P < R < U).

Words beginning with UDAYPR: 1! = 1 (UDAYPRU)

Next word is UDAYPUR.

∴ Rank = 1440 + 120 + 18 + 1 + 1 = 1580
