[figure] Two blocks of masses m and M, (M > m), are placed on a frictionless table as shown in figure. A massless spring with spring constant k is attached with the lower block. If the system is slightly displaced and released, then ( = coefficient of friction between the two blocks) Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. B, C, D Only
  2. C, D, E Only
  3. A, B, D Only
  4. A, B, C Only

Answer

(3) A, B, D Only

Solution

Without slipping both blocks move together; only the spring force acts horizontally on the system:

(M + m)a = -kx a = - kxM + m B correct

= kM + m T = 2 m + Mk A correct

Friction alone accelerates the upper block:

f = m|a| = mk|x|M + m (contains k, not ) C incorrect

Normal reaction on m is mg f = mg, not (M + m)g E incorrect

No slipping even at the extreme position (|x| = A):

mkAM + m mg A = (M + m)gk D correct

A, B, D only

Answer: (3)
