You are given a fairly old piece of dicot stem and a dicot root. Which of the following anatomical structures will you use to distinguish between the two?
- Secondary xylem
- Protoxylem
- Secondary phloem
- Cortical cells
Answer
(2) Protoxylem
Solution
Both old dicot stem and old dicot root undergo secondary growth, both have secondary xylem, secondary phloem and (crushed) cortex, so these cannot distinguish them.
As per NCERT, in roots the protoxylem lies towards the periphery and metaxylem towards the centre (exarch), whereas in stems the protoxylem lies towards the centre (pith) and metaxylem towards the periphery (endarch).
The primary xylem persists near the centre even after secondary growth, so the position of protoxylem distinguishes the two.
