Meristematic tissue responsible for increase in girth of tree trunk is :
- Phellogen
- Intercalary meristem
- Apical meristem
- Lateral meristem
Answer
(4) Lateral meristem
Solution
Increase in girth (secondary growth) is brought about by meristems lying along the sides of the axis.
As per NCERT, the meristem that occurs in the mature regions of roots and shoots and appears later than the primary meristem is the secondary or lateral meristem; fascicular vascular cambium, interfascicular cambium and cork cambium are lateral meristems, responsible for producing the secondary tissues.
Apical and intercalary meristems bring about increase in length; phellogen alone forms only the periderm.
