The magnetic field of a plane electromagnetic wave is given by B = 3 10-8 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) j, then the associated electric field will be :

  1. 9 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) k V/m
  2. 3 10-8 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) i V/m
  3. 3 10-8 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) i V/m
  4. 9 (1.6 103 x - 48 1010 t) k V/m

Answer

(1) 9 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) k V/m

Solution

Speed of the wave: v = k = 48 10101.6 103 = 3 108 m/s = c

E0 = cB0 = (3 108)(3 10-8) = 9 V/m

The phase (kx + t) shows that the wave travels along -x direction, and E oscillates in phase with B (same cosine function).

Direction of propagation is along E B. With B along j: k j = - i

E = 9 (1.6 103 x + 48 1010 t) k V/m
