The ratio of contributions made by the electric field and magnetic field components to the intensity of an electromagnetic wave is : (c = speed of electromagnetic waves)

  1. 1 : 1
  2. 1 : c
  3. 1 : c2
  4. c : 1

Answer

(1) 1 : 1

Solution

Energy density of electric field: uE = 12 0 E2

Energy density of magnetic field: uB = B22 0

For an EM wave, E = cB and c2 = 1 0 0

⇒ uE = 12 0 c2 B2 = 12 0 1 0 0 B2 = B22 0 = uB

∵ Intensity = u c, both fields contribute equally.

∴ Ratio = 1 : 1
