Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect

Answer

(1) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Solution

Statement I: Incorrect – as per NCERT, sickle-cell anaemia is an autosomal recessive trait, while haemophilia is a sex-linked (X-linked) recessive disease.

Statement II: Correct – both are blood disorders: in sickle-cell anaemia the RBCs become sickle-shaped due to a defective haemoglobin (Glu → Val at the sixth position of the β-globin chain), and in haemophilia a protein of the blood-clotting cascade is affected, so blood does not clot normally.
