What amount of energy is released from glucose during lactic acid fermentation?

  1. Approximately 15%
  2. More than 18%
  3. About 10%
  4. Less than 7%

Answer

(4) Less than 7%

Solution

In fermentation, glucose is only partially oxidised (to lactic acid or ethanol) and NADH is reoxidised to NAD+ without the ETS.

As per NCERT, in both lactic acid and alcoholic fermentation much energy is not released; less than seven per cent of the energy in glucose is released.
