Conversion of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, the first irreversible reaction of glycolysis, is catalyzed by

  1. Enolase
  2. Phosphofructokinase
  3. Aldolase
  4. Hexokinase

Answer

(4) Hexokinase

Solution

As per NCERT, in glycolysis glucose is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate by the enzyme hexokinase, using one ATP:

Glucose + ATP Hexokinase Glucose-6-phosphate + ADP

Phosphofructokinase converts fructose-6-phosphate to fructose-1,6-bisphosphate, aldolase splits fructose-1,6-bisphosphate into triose phosphates, and enolase converts 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate.

Answer: (4)
