The number of substrate level phosphorylations in one turn of citric acid cycle is

  1. Zero
  2. One
  3. Three
  4. Two

Answer

(2) One

Solution

As per NCERT, in the TCA cycle succinyl-CoA is oxidised to succinic acid, and this step is coupled with the synthesis of one molecule of GTP:

Succinyl-CoA + GDP + Pi Succinic acid + CoA + GTP

⇒ This is the only substrate level phosphorylation in one turn of the cycle (GTP is then converted to ATP).

∴ Number of substrate level phosphorylations per turn = 1

Answer: (2)
