A fluid is in streamline flow across a horizontal pipe of variable area of cross section. For this which of the following statements is correct?

  1. The velocity is maximum at the narrowest part of the pipe and pressure is maximum at the widest part of the pipe.
  2. Velocity and pressure both are maximum at the narrowest part of the pipe.
  3. Velocity and pressure both are maximum at the widest part of the pipe.
  4. The velocity is minimum at the narrowest part of the pipe and the pressure is minimum at the widest part of the pipe.

Answer

(1) The velocity is maximum at the narrowest part of the pipe and pressure is maximum at the widest part of the pipe.

Solution

Equation of continuity: Av = constant ⇒ velocity is maximum where the area is minimum (narrowest part).

Bernoulli's equation for a horizontal pipe: P + 12 2 = constant

⇒ where velocity is minimum (widest part), pressure is maximum.

Answer: (1)

A balloon is made of a material of surface tension S and its inflation outlet (from where gas is filled in it) has small area A. It is filled with a gas of density and takes a spherical shape of radius R. When the gas is allowed to flow freely out of it, its radius r changes from R to 0 (zero) in time T. If the speed v(r) of gas coming out of the balloon depends on r as ra and T S A R then
