Reduction by LiAlH4 of hydrolysed product of an ester gives
- two alcohols
- two aldehydes
- one acid and one alcohol
- two acids.
Answer
(1) two alcohols
Solution
Hydrolysis of an ester gives a carboxylic acid and an alcohol:
RCOOR' + H2O H+ RCOOH + R'OH
∵ As per NCERT, LiAlH4 reduces carboxylic acids to primary alcohols:
RCOOH LiAlH4/ether RCH2OH
The alcohol R'OH is not affected.
∴ The products are two alcohols, RCH2OH and R'OH.
