Benzoic acid may be converted into ethyl benzoate by reaction with :

  1. ethyl alcohol
  2. ethyl alcohol and dry HCl
  3. ethyl chloride
  4. sodium ethoxide.

Answer

(2) ethyl alcohol and dry HCl

Solution

∵ As per NCERT, carboxylic acids are esterified by heating with alcohols in the presence of a mineral acid such as conc. H2SO4 or dry HCl gas as catalyst (Fischer esterification).

C6H5COOH + C2H5OH dry HCl C6H5COOC2H5 + H2O

Ethyl alcohol alone reacts too slowly, and sodium ethoxide only forms the salt C6H5COONa.

∴ Ethyl alcohol and dry HCl convert benzoic acid into ethyl benzoate.
