In 1984, the Bhopal gas tragedy took place because methyl isocyanate :-
- Reacted with DDT
- Reacted with water
- Reacted with ammonia
- Reacted with CO2
Answer
(2) Reacted with water
Solution
In December 1984, water entered tank E-610 of methyl isocyanate (MIC, CH3-N=C=O) at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal.
⇒ MIC reacted exothermically with water:
CH3NCO + H2O CH3NH2 + CO2
⇒ The heat raised the temperature and pressure in the tank, and a large cloud of toxic MIC gas escaped into the air.
∴ The tragedy took place because methyl isocyanate reacted with water.
